Fluoride and Fluoride-Free Options
We offer both fluoride and fluoride-free preventive treatment, because we want our patients to make their own informed decisions about their care.
It's Your Decision — We're Here to Explain the Options
At your preventive care visit, you can choose a traditional fluoride treatment or a fluoride-free alternative. Our team will explain both so you can decide what feels right for you and your family.
Fluoride Treatment
Fluoride is a mineral widely used in dentistry to help strengthen tooth enamel and support cavity prevention. It's typically applied as a varnish during a routine cleaning visit and is one of the most well-studied preventive treatments available.
Fluoride-Free (Non-Fluoride) Treatment
For patients who prefer to avoid fluoride, we also offer a fluoride-free option, often based on hydroxyapatite, a mineral that makes up much of natural tooth enamel. It's applied the same way, as part of your regular visit.
Neither option is right for every patient in every situation. Your dentist or hygienist will help you think through what makes sense for you, based on your oral health, risk factors, and personal preference.
Hydroxyapatite Varnish
Our fluoride-free varnish option uses hydroxyapatite, the same mineral that makes up much of your natural tooth enamel. Some patients also find it more comfortable if they experience sensitivity with fluoride.
Just ask your hygienist for the fluoride-free option at your next cleaning visit.

Why Patients Choose Each Option
Reasons Patients Choose Fluoride
- Long track record of use in preventive dentistry
- Widely recommended by dental organizations
- Familiar option many patients have used for years
Reasons Patients Choose Fluoride-Free
- Personal, family, or dietary preference
- Concern about swallowing fluoride, especially for young children
- Wanting a mineral-based option that mirrors natural enamel
Making an Informed Decision, Together
We won't push you toward one option or the other. Our job is to explain what each choice involves, answer your questions honestly, and support whichever option you and your dentist decide is the right fit, visit after visit.
You're welcome to choose differently at a future visit if your preference changes. Just let your hygienist know at check-in.
Good for the Whole Family
Both options are available for children and adults. Your dentist will factor in age, cavity risk, and your family's preferences when discussing which option may make sense for each visit.
What Does It Cost?
Fluoride-free (hydroxyapatite) varnish is $60. Fluoride treatment pricing may vary. See our fee schedule for current pricing, or ask our team at your next appointment.
Common Questions
Is fluoride treatment safe?
Professionally applied fluoride treatment is widely used in dentistry and considered safe for most patients when applied as directed. If you have questions or concerns about fluoride, your dentist is happy to talk through them with you.
What is a fluoride-free alternative?
A common fluoride-free option uses hydroxyapatite, a mineral that makes up much of natural tooth enamel, as an alternative approach to supporting enamel strength without fluoride.
Which option is better?
Neither option is universally "better." It depends on your individual needs, risk factors, and personal preference. Your dentist can help you weigh the options for your specific situation.
Can I choose fluoride-free treatment for my child?
Yes, this is one of the choices we offer for patients of any age, including children. Your dentist will discuss what makes sense based on your child's individual risk factors and your preferences.
Can I switch between options at different visits?
Yes. This is your choice at each visit, and you're welcome to discuss it with your hygienist or dentist any time your preference changes.
How much does the fluoride-free option cost?
Our fluoride-free (hydroxyapatite) varnish is $60. Fluoride treatment pricing may vary. See our fee schedule or ask our team for current pricing.
Does insurance cover fluoride treatment?
Coverage varies by plan and by age. See the dental insurance plans we work with, or call our office and we'll help you understand your specific benefits.
Will my dentist push me toward one option?
No. We want our patients to make their own informed decisions. Our team will explain both options clearly and answer your questions, and the choice is yours.
